Januvia (sitagliptin) is prescribed to manage type 2 diabetes mellitus. It works by inhibiting the DPP-4 enzyme, which increases incretin hormone levels. This helps the body release more insulin after meals, reduces glucagon production, and supports better blood sugar control.
Januvia is usually taken once daily with or without food. Tablets should be swallowed whole. The dose is determined by the healthcare provider based on kidney function and individual patient needs. It may be prescribed alone or with other diabetes medications such as metformin, sulfonylureas, or insulin.
Inform your doctor if you have kidney disease, pancreatitis, liver problems, or a history of heart failure. Maintain a healthy diet and exercise routine as part of diabetes management. Report any symptoms such as severe abdominal pain or unexplained fatigue.
Do not use Januvia if allergic to sitagliptin or any component of the tablet. It is not indicated for type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis.
Common side effects include headache, nasopharyngitis, upper respiratory infection, and mild gastrointestinal discomfort. Serious side effects may include pancreatitis, severe allergic reactions, joint pain, or low blood sugar (especially when combined with other diabetes medications). Seek medical attention if serious symptoms occur.
Januvia may interact with other antidiabetic drugs, ACE inhibitors, digoxin, or certain immunosuppressants. Inform your doctor about all prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and supplements you are taking.
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one. Do not double the dose.
Overdose may cause hypoglycemia, nausea, vomiting, or dizziness. Seek immediate medical attention if an overdose is suspected.
Store Januvia at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and light. Keep tablets in the original container and out of reach of children.
