Prelone is an oral corticosteroid used to treat a variety of inflammatory and allergic conditions, including asthma, allergic reactions, rheumatoid arthritis, and autoimmune disorders. It contains prednisolone sodium phosphate, a synthetic steroid that reduces inflammation, swelling, and immune response. It is especially useful in children or adults who have difficulty swallowing tablets. The dispersible form allows for easy administration and rapid absorption.
The dosage of Prelone varies based on the age, condition, and response to treatment. The tablets should be dissolved in a small amount of water before administration or taken as directed by a healthcare provider. Doses are often given once or multiple times daily, preferably with food to reduce stomach upset. Follow the doctor’s instructions closely and never alter the dose without medical guidance.
Long-term use of corticosteroids like Orapred may lead to weakened immune function, bone loss, weight gain, or high blood pressure. Use cautiously in individuals with diabetes, infections, mental health conditions, or gastrointestinal issues. Do not suddenly stop the medication without medical advice, as this can cause adrenal insufficiency. Regular monitoring of growth (in children) and blood pressure is recommended during prolonged use.
Prelone should not be used in patients with systemic fungal infections, hypersensitivity to prednisolone or other corticosteroids, or untreated serious infections. It is not suitable for individuals who have recently received live vaccines. Use during pregnancy or breastfeeding should be carefully considered and only under medical supervision. Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to sodium phosphate derivatives.
Common side effects may include increased appetite, mood changes, indigestion, or difficulty sleeping. Long-term use can lead to Cushing’s syndrome, osteoporosis, high blood sugar, and delayed wound healing. Some individuals may also experience facial swelling, acne, or fluid retention. Seek medical attention if you notice signs of infection, vision problems, or unusual bruising.
Orapred may interact with drugs such as NSAIDs, diuretics, antidiabetic medications, live vaccines, and anticonvulsants. These interactions can affect steroid levels or increase the risk of side effects like ulcers or blood sugar changes. Always inform your healthcare provider about all medications, supplements, or herbal products you're taking. Adjustments in dosage or close monitoring may be required.
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember unless it’s almost time for the next scheduled dose. If it’s close to the next dose, skip the missed one — do not double up. Maintain a regular dosing schedule to ensure proper treatment. Contact your doctor if multiple doses are missed.
Overdose symptoms can include extreme mood changes, swelling, muscle weakness, or severe fatigue. Long-term overdose may cause hormonal imbalance, increased intracranial pressure, or bone thinning. In the event of an overdose, seek immediate medical help. Supportive care and monitoring are essential in managing serious effects.
Store Prelone at room temperature (20–25°C / 68–77°F) in a dry, cool place, away from moisture and direct light. Keep tablets in their original blister pack until ready to use. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Do not use expired medication and dispose of unused tablets responsibly.
